Cat Intoxications

Cat Intoxications

It’s very frequent to suspect poisoning in cats, but very few times the suspicion of a sneaky poisoning can be confirmed and more difficult to prove. Much affection begins so suddenly and with symptoms so dramatic that they make think you about a toxic substance. Nevertheless, it is a question of a viral infection. More than one cat has been uselessly tortured by administering unknown antidotes, instead of treating directly the real disease. There is one general rule: any serious pathological sickness, poisoning or not, must be treated by a veterinarian.

First of all, poisonings are very difficult to recognize. The fall of the third eyelid can be an indication of it, but however, it is not an unmistakable sign. There is no antidote that could be moderately trustworthy against a great variety of possible poisons. Coal administration answers to a well-meaning attitude, but it involves an additional risk of pneumonia. Who ever make cats drink salty water is clearly committing an act of torture against animals. The selective character of cats protects them with enough safety from consuming toxins. It can happen that a cat in some occasion can eat a poisoned mouse. Corporal contact is also possible with vegetable pesticides.

Poisonings are more frequent by swallowing inappropriate medicines. You must not administer any kind of preparation that is not recommended by a veterinarian. The accurate instinct of cats prepares them in life at liberty against poisonous plants. Instead, domestic cats munch everything that is given to them. That is why it’s advisable to leave germinated barley or a bowl with spring onions. Some dangerous decorative plants for cats are: dieffenbachia, euphorbia, ivy, holly, mistletoe, tulip, daffodil, lily-of-the-valley, anturio, cyclamen and begonias. You must always tell the veterinarian what you or your family members gave your cat or caressed it with. This will help order an specific treatment. One can always think that maybe a mean neighbor has poisoned our cat. Be careful, it is almost always impossible to adduce proof of irreproachable poisoning. When the proof is not satisfactory, besides having a dead or sick animal, you will have the problem of a possible lawsuit for defamation.
