New Cat Breeds

The acceptance of a “new” breed or variety is submitted to the rigid control of the feline associations of each country.

The acknowledgment is not transferable from one country to another, so a race established on one country must submit itself again to a new process to be acknowledged and they even might not obtain it.

An acknowledged race in any country of the world has no guarantee of having a permanent place on the world wide feline exhibitions.

The Pekingese Persian
As an example, lets see the story of the Pekingese Persian.

The race has its beginning on the thirties, when in the United States occasional spontaneous mutations where observed on the characteristics of the heads of some Persians whelps with the appearance of a solid red color and tabby marks. Their most evident feature where a profound incision between the eyes and a flattened nose, which gave the cats a similar appearance to a Pekingese dog.

The U.S.A acknowledged the race cat fanciers’ association and the Canadian cat association, but not by all the North American associations.

The history of the Pekingese Persian has not been without problems.

Its prominent cheeks and its flattened nose provokes breathing problems and the wrinkled snout favors the obstruction of the lachrymal conduits, The teeth of both maxillaries don’t always touch when biting, which difficult its feeding.

Everyone knows the breeding problems that the Persians present, but breeding the Pekingese variety is a more serious situation. Apart from the risks associated to the birth, there is a high death rate with the whelps (up to 50% on the first six months) because the formation of the mouth difficult and sometimes disables the obtainment of milk from the mother in this circumstances it is difficult to imagine how the race ended up being recognize in the first place, we are sure that now a days they wouldn’t be acknowledged. It has never been largely recognized and it even has lost some of its support on the United States, maybe due to the difficulty for maintaining the number of specimens required for breeding.

In the nineties, the new admissions where reduced year after year, and there were moments in which it seems that the race would disappear.
